I have watched the film based on this book, a long time ago, and for some reason I don’t think I enjoyed it, so I worried I would have the same the response to this book. However, I picked up this book and I just couldn’t seem to put it down.
The Hours was a magical piece of work, following three generations of women surrounding a story by Virginia Woolf.
Virginia Woolf is working on her story, Mrs. Dalloway, while struggling with mental illness, fear, change, and wondering where to go next.
Mrs. Brown is nearly suffering the safe feelings of Virginia Woolf, preparing for her husband’s birthday, taking care of her young child, and generally unhappy in her life and having no way of finding out how to survive the feelings and her life.
Clarissa is a portrait of Mrs. Dalloway, a near mirror image, struggling with the task of throwing a party for a dear friend dying of Aids, while maintaining the relationship with her lover and daughter.
It was an amazing story of transformation, making tough decisions, parallel lives, and interconnected feelings all surrounding this book.
